Synopsis

Yusei KamenIt is the 21st century. The planet Pinelon is discovered along the same orbit as Earth, on the opposite side of the sun. The two planets maintain a friendly relationship. Earthlings and Pinelons are the same human type. There is much traffic between the two planets, immigration increases, and mixed marriages between Earthlings and Pinelons become common. For this reason, many children are born with both Earth and Pinelon blood. The first of such children is Peter, born to an Earthling father Johansen, a rocket pilot, and a Pinelon mother Maria. When Peter turns 15, his father Johansen’s rocket blows up in the sky over Pinelon, a result of which war breaks out between Earth and Pinelon. The friendly relationship is ruined, and the Pinelons who have migrated to Earth are sent to concentration camps, including Peter’s mother Maria. Pinelon gains the upper hand in the war thanks to its superior technology, while Earth faces a difficult fight. Then, out of nowhere appears Yusei Kamen, a masked warrior wearing a cloak. His true identity is Johansen’s son Peter. Peter transforms into Yusei Kamen and defends Earth from the Pinelons. There was a popular scene that appeared in every episode: whenever Earth is in trouble, Yusei Kamen would appear out of nowhere and say “They call me Yusei Kamen” in response to people yelling “Who are you?” Yusei Kamen touched on aspects such as war caused by misunderstanding and broken friendship and stereotypes toward people born to parents from different planets, and was a pioneer in the genre of serious transformation anime with a rather profound message.
