Synopsis

Tenku Senki ShuratoThis action series features otherworldly fantasy and the interaction of young characters, and was produced by Tatsunoko Production. The protagonist Shurato and his best friend Guy are two youths really into karate and other martial arts, but one day, they are suddenly engulfed in light and taken to the heavenly sphere, a world separate from the human one. There, Shurato learns that he is the reincarnation of Shura-o, a figure that had died in a great war that took place over ten thousand years ago. The God of Harmony Vishnu asks Shurato to save the heavenly sphere from the Thunder God Indra who has rebelled.Immediately after that, Indra changes Vishnu into stone, and Shurato is given the blame. One of Shurato’s enemies is his former best friend Guy, who had, while he was reincarnating, been changed in to Yasha-o by the God of Revival Shiva’s magic spell. Shurato is pursued by divine generals, warriors of the heavenly sphere, and, in order to fulfill his mission and role, gets into his lion divine armor (shakti) to confront Indra and the Asura gods pulling the strings from behind.Characters in this series each have their own divine armor (shakti), and the series was popular among women as a “battle suit” or “equipment” type of animation featuring good looking young men. The world view of the series is very oriental, featuring motifs of esoteric Buddhism and Indian mythology, and thus exhibits the strong influence of Seinto Seiya (Saint Seiya) that was broadcast in the same period as well as the manga Kujaku-o (Spirit Warrior).
