Synopsis
Bokura Yakyuu Tanteidan The series was conceived by Noboru Tsuburaya, the third president of Tsuburaya Productions. It was intended as a tokusatsu series with an approach different from conventional sci-fi shows. Although the storyline is completely original, the series is partly inspired by Edogawa Ranpo’s novel The Boy Detectives Club, pitching a boys’ baseball team against phantoms.Inspector Dorou Arana is after Red Mantle, a phantom thief that is making the headlines. He asks Shinsuke Tanaka, a childhood friend and the coach for a boys’ baseball team called the Wanpakus, for some advice, which eventually drags the team into a confrontation with Red Mantle. Led by their brilliant-minded captain and star player Tenma Hoshizora (played by Daijiro Tsutsumi, who made his debut in this role), the team members form the Baseball Detectives Club, working to catch Red Mantle in a manner even more successful than adults. Since the story revolves around a boys’ baseball team, they are pitched against a different baseball team in each episode.T he young Joe Shishido plays Inspector Arana, former professional boxer Guts Ishimatsu plays Coach Tanaka, and Susumu Miyao and Osami Nabe make guest appearances. The cast gave Bokura Yakyuu Tanteidan a strong comedy element despite it being a tokusatsu production, which makes it an unusual work among Tsuburaya shows. It was produced by Tokyo Channel 12 (current TV Tokyo) and Tsuburaya Productions. It ran for 18 episodes from April 1980. As it was a comedy, it is not made clear whether Red Mantle was defeated. The screenplay was written by Shukei Nagasaka, who later became a famous screenwriter for detective series, and Masaki Tsuji, a pioneer in anime screenplay. Bokura Yakyuu Tanteidan is a groundbreaking TV series that opened new horizons in Tsuburaya Productions’ tokusatsu production style.
