Synopsis

Hidamari no Ki, Tree in the Sun The series is based on a manga by Osamu Tezuka, and it depicts two contrasting protagonists living at the end of the Edo period with their own beliefs. The protagonist, Manjiro Ibuya is a samurai from the Matsudaira Harimamori clan. He has a clumsy way of life but is skilled with the sword. However, the time was already the end of the Edo period; one could not live by the sword anymore. Toko Fujita, who is also a native of Hitachi Province, likened the shogunate of the time to a “tree in the sun,” meaning an old tree whose contents had been eaten away by termites and other insects. Manjiro lives by this phrase. The other protagonist, Ryoan Tezuka, a doctor, was born into an “elite” family. He is a prodigal while working as a doctor practicing Western medicine, and dreams of living a life where he can feel more like a human being. The two hit it off by chance, and they pursue their own paths, sometimes as friends and sometimes as rivals in love, while engaging in friendly competition with each other. In the midst of this, the Boshin War breaks out. Manjiro joins the war as a shogunate vassal, despite it being called as a tree in the sun. Ryoan chooses to become a military doctor in the government army, which would make him an adversary of Manjiro, and he is dedicated to protecting his patients. Ryoan’s father, Ryosen Tezuka, was modeled after Osamu Tezuka’s great-great-grandfather.The manga was serialized from April 1981 to December 1986 in Shogakukan’s Big Comic and won the 29th Shogakukan Manga Award in the seinen general category . Since 1992, numerous theater productions of the manga have been performed. The TV anime was broadcast from April to September 2000 and won the Excellence Award in the animation category of the 4th Japan Media Arts Festival. A live-action drama series was produced as an NHK BS period drama from April to June 2012, starring Hayato Ichihara as Manjiro and Hiroki Narimiya as Ryoan.
