Synopsis

Okami Shonen Ken, Wolf Boy KenKen is a boy who was raised by a she wolf named Dorothy in the jungle of Dogar (a fictional country). He lives with his foster brothers, the twin wolves Chicchi and Poppo, among various other animals. Members of the family include the old Boss who always looks out for his friends, the handsome guy Jack, and other wolves. Ken does not consider himself a human being, and wishes to become a powerful wolf. He wears the “king’s sword” around his waist, which he received from a silver lion. Although Ken’s birth is shrouded in mystery, he is not afraid of humans and can speak to them.Ken fights with wicked natives who try to capture animals, and explores the “Demon’s Woods” that even powerful animals fear. Throughout the episodes, Ken never seems to be bothered about the difficult issues surrounding his upbringing or birth. The story is all about how he survives in the jungle with his family and friends.Unlike many other productions at the time, Wolf Boy Ken was an originally-developed story. It was broadcast by TV Asahi (then known as NET). The original story was developed by the famous animator Hiroo Ono, also known by the name Sadao Tsukioka. Directors of individual episodes included Isao Takahata, who later joined Studio Ghibli. The initial series by Toei Animation consisted of as many as 86 episodes.Though maybe not remembering the series itself, some generations probably recall the rhythmical theme song that starts with the sound of tropical percussion instruments followed by a chorus of boys singing “Wow, Wow, Wow.”
