Synopsis
Teito Monogatari (Doomed Megalopolis)—Supernatural Babylon About ten years after the Meiji Restoration, the imperial capital, Tokyo, is continuing to develop, aiming to catch up with the great Western powers in terms of both peoples’ livelihoods and culture, in comparison to the Edo era. However, that alone is not enough to strengthen its defense as the future imperial capital, so psychic powers are also used to defend it. Therefore, people of culture, including Eiichi Shibusawa and Rohan Koda, and government bureaucrats, develop the Imperial Capital Reconstruction Plan. One who stands in the way is the demon Yasunori Kato, who curses the Imperial Capital. Kato tries to wake the spirit of Taira no Masakado, enshrined as the guardian god of the imperial capital, by using magic. The spirit of Taira no Masakado is the imperial capital’s guardian god while it remains asleep, but because its sleep is aroused by psychic powers it turns into a vengeful ghost that ends up destroying the imperial capital. However, destroying the imperial capital requires that a person with psychic powers becomes a sacrificial victim to awake Masakado’s spirit. That psychic is Yukari Tatsumiya, a younger sister of Yoichiro Tatsumiya, a young bureaucrat in the Finance Ministry involved in the Imperial Capital Reconstruction Plan. To protect Yukari, who is targeted by Kato, Yasumasa Hirai, commander-in-chief of the Tsuchimikado Clan, Tokyo’s famous exorcist family, and his fellows, rise. Kato however, who appears in ever-changing forms, ends up contacting Yukari’s psychic powers while the guard is down of her elder brother, who is trying to protect her, as is Junichi Narutaki, who has taken a fancy to her. The exorcists of the Tsuchimikado Clan also try to protect Yukari with all their influence, but they can do nothing against Kato’s magic, and she is taken away. From this point, battle commences between the demon Yasunori Kato, and those protecting the imperial capital.
