Synopsis Ketsudan、 Decisions Following the attack on Pearl Harbor that took place on December 8、 1941 (Japan time)、 Japan went into war with the Allied Forces led by the U.S. Ketsudan (Decisions) is a non-fiction animation that focuses on how various Japanese officers made decisions relating to military operations and orders in the respective fronts. The series describes the agony and thoughts of officers and soldiers in the field while providing a faithful reconstruction of the historical events of World War II from its outbreak. Episode 1 covered the attack on Pearl Harbor、 followed by the Battle of Midway、 the Fall of Singapore、 and the sinking of Prince of Wales and Repulse、 among other events. The arms and weaponry used at the time are faithfully depicted based on documentation wherever available. The series represented Tatsunoko Production’s ambitious intention to create a series that shifts the target from children to adults. Its faithfulness to historical facts led to the coining of the term “animentary、” which is a combination of documentary and animation. The series may be included in the genre of military history depicting the whole war from beginning to end. It was also rare for this kind of animation to be broadcast on television、 and、 as expected、 Nippon Television、 the broadcaster、 received many complaints from viewers with antiwar views. The opening and ending songs are certainly rather militaristic、 and some regarded the series as glorifying the war. However、 the purpose of the series was to shed light on the agony experienced by soldiers during the war while remaining faithful to the facts. The series is currently available on Blu-ray.
