Makiba no Shoujo Katori、 Katri、 Girl of the MeadowsThe year is 1915. A young girl named Katri lives in a rural village in southern Finland. She lost her father when she was little、 and her mother Sarah has gone to Germany to work. However、 the World War I broke out soon after; Katri has lost touch with her mother、 and the remittances have stopped coming in. In order to make a living with her poor grandparents、 Katri and her pet dog Abel get a job looking after cattle at a farm on the Laiccola estate. One day、 Katri gets a book from a student she recently met. The more she reads、 the more she wants to learn. Having met and parted with many different people through her work、 Katri begins to seriously consider her future dream. She acquires new knowledge through self-education while working at different estates. Lotta、 master of the Kuusela estate、 takes interest in Katri and makes it possible for her to enter a school to study in earnest. Katri makes remarkable progress thanks to the help of many people. Six years later、 Katri learns that her mother Sarah who she was separated from is staying in a hospital in the same town as her school. The two are reunited. Katri returns to her grandparents’ house in her hometown with her mother、 who has recovered. She writes a heartwarming story about her experiences、 becoming a successful writer.Katri、 Girl of the Meadows is based on The Shepherd、 the Servant Girl、 and the Hostess written by Finnish writer Auni Nuolivaara. It was produced by Nippon Animation as the 10th production in the World Masterpiece Theater series and was broadcast on Fuji TV in 1984.
