Synopsis |
Poppen Sensei to Kaerazu no NumaThe main character works as an assistant professor at the Department of Biology of Udo University. He is known as “Prof. Poppen” because of the sound made by the heels of the slip-ons he always wears. Poppen lives in an old mansion left to him by his father、 the former dean of the Department of Biology of Udo University、 and spends his days observing creatures. One day、 during the university summer holiday、 Prof. Poppen receives a request to write about the ecosystem of the “Kaerazu no Numa” (“Pond from Which Nobody Returns”)、 located within the university campus. However、 Prof. Poppen is unable to make much progress. Not knowing what to do、 he decides to have lunch by the pond. Then、 he sees a beige colored ant lion pass right before him.Being an insect lover、 Prof. Poppen chases after the ant lion. Then、 his watch suddenly stops、 and he transforms into an ant lion.Subsequently、 Prof. Poppen—now in the form of an ant lion—assumes the mind of a long-nosed fish that eats him、 and then that of a kingfisher that eats the fish. This goes on、 with Prof. Poppen assuming the mind of the predator each time he is eaten. Through changing his form many times within the food chain、 Poppen develops a profound understanding of the pond’s ecosystem. This animation series depicts the fantastic adventures of Prof. Poppen、 during which he explains various phenomena as if he were teaching a biology lecture. It was broadcast as a 90-minute special animation on TBS channels in 1982.The series was based on Yoshihiko Funasaki’s children’s literature series published by Chikumashobo、 which consisted of 11 volumes in total、 including Poppen Sensei to Kaerazu no Numa.
