| Synopsis |
Hakkuruberi Fin MonogatariHakkuruberi Fin Monogatari is based on the American novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that was written by Mark Twain and published in 1885、 and was the second animated version of the novel in Japan. The novel was written as a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and features Huckleberry Finn (Huck)、 Tom Sawyer’s friend and companion.Huck obtained many gold coins in his adventures in the previous story. Since he had no parents、 Huck is adopted by the Watsons、 a very wealthy family. Although he receives a strict education、 Huck enjoys school life with his best friend Tom. However、 Huck’s father、 who had been missing、 hears rumors that his son has become rich、 claims guardianship of Huck、 and takes him away. Huck escapes from his father by faking his own death and is reunited with Jim、 the Watsons’ servant. Learning that Jim is about to be sold off as a slave in the South、 Huck decides to help Jim flee to a free state and accompanies him in his journey down the Mississippi. In their journey、 they meet unscrupulous white people who contrast with the unselfish black man、 Jim. Because of such depictions、 as well as its coverage of diverse topics ranging from racism to religion、 the novel was banned in a library in Concord、 Massachusetts、 right after its publication. In Hakkuruberi Fin Monogtari、 the original story has been edited so as to be suitable for young children in Japan. For example、 the time when Huck learns of his father’s death has been changed to the first half of the story、 and a scene in which Huck mourns his parents’ death has been inserted.
