Synopsis Ushiro no Hyakutaro Ushiro no Hyakutaro is an anime and live-action adaptation of a manga by Jiro Tsunoda、 who is one of the few Tokiwa-so manga artists who has produced numerous horror works. The horror story revolves around Ichitaro Ushiro、 the son of the parapsychologist Kentaro Ushiro、 and the supernatural phenomena he encounters. Due to his extensive training in supernatural powers as part of his father’s research、 Ichitaro develops mystical powers. As a result、 Ichitaro discovers that a guardian spirit named Hyakutaro (officially、 Ushiro Hyakutaro no Mikoto)、 who is only visible to him、 is always present behind him. Hyakutaro was a 15-year-old boy from a samurai family who died in the Muromachi period. A bearer of potent supernatural powers、 Hyakutaro has saved Ichitaro from spirit possession on numerous occasions. A s Hyakutaro is Ichitaro’s guardian spirit、 he cannot save other human beings. What is more、 there were times where he would intentionally refrain from providing aid for the sake of Ichitaro’s training and growth. Ichitaro goes on to tackle numerous supernatural cases and phenomena with the help of Hyakutaro and Zero、 a spiritual dog with supernatural abilities. The original manga was serialized from May 1985 to Jun 1990 in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine and Monthly Shonen Magazine. An anime adaptation was produced by Pierrot in 1991、 and a live-action adaptation series premiered on the TV Tokyo network in 1997. Although Jiro Tsunoda’s debut work was not a horror story、 following Ushiro no Hyakutaro he released Kyofu Shimbun、 Borei Gakkyu、 and other mystery works with a touch of entertainment、 earning a reputation as a horror manga artist. The musician Hiro Tsunoda is his younger brother.
