Synopsis Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinju、 Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju This masterpiece depicts the friendly competition among men in the world of rakugo from the prewar period to the bubble era in the long history of the art of storytelling. The story begins when a man、 who has just completed his prison sentence、 is so impressed by Yakumo Yurakutei the 8th、 a rakugo storyteller who visited the prison out of sympathy、 that he goes to Yakumo’s theater straight from the prison and asks to become his apprentice. Yakumo、 who had never taken any apprentice before、 eventually invites the man to his home as an assistant and live-in apprentice and gives him a name Yotaro. At Yakumo’s house is his adopted daughter. Yotaro learns that Konatsu’s real father is a genius rakugo performer named Sukeroku Yurakutei the 2nd、 who had a contentious relationship with Yakumo、 and that he has passed away. In accordance with the culture of name succession unique to the world of traditional performing arts、 Yotaro succeeds the name passed down from generation to generation. The original manga written by Haruko Kumota was serialized in ITAN from 2010 to 2016 and won the Excellence Award in the manga category at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards、 the 38th Kodansha Manga Award in the Best General Manga category in 2014、 and the 21st Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in the New Creator Prize category in 2017. The anime edition began as an OVA、 and the TV series aired its first season from January 2016 on MBS、 and its second season、 Sukeroku Futatabi-hen、 from January 2017. Since rakugo is actually performed、 rakugo storyteller Shinpei Hayashiya was hired as a rakugo supervisor for the animated version. A TV drama series set in the vicinity of World War II was broadcast on NHK General’s Drama 10 slot from October to December 2018. Masaki Okada played the lead role of Yakumo Yurakutei the 8th、 and musical actor Ikusaburo Yamazaki played the role of Sukeroku. Kyotaro Yanagiya served as the rakugo supervisor for the TV drama version.
